Frequently asked questions

What is ximg.es?

A free service that generates placeholder images for building websites. Size, colours, text and format all go in the URL, so you just put it in the src of an <img> tag. No sign-up and no API key needed.

How do I add a placeholder image to my HTML?

Write the size in the path: <img src="https://ximg.es/600x400" alt=""> returns a grey 600 × 400 pixel image. With a single number (/300) you get a square.

How do I change the colours?

Add the background and text colours as path segments: /600x400/1e293b/f8fafc. It accepts 3, 4, 6 or 8 digit hex (with alpha), CSS names such as red, and transparent.

Can I use my own text?

Yes, with ?text=: /600x400?text=Hello%20world. The | character splits the text into several lines, and the font size adjusts automatically.

Which image formats are supported?

PNG by default, plus JPG, GIF, WebP and AVIF by adding the extension: /600x400.webp or /600x400/f00/fff.jpg.

Are there preset sizes for banners?

Yes, IAB ad formats and screen sizes have aliases: /leaderboard (728 × 90), /mediumrectangle (300 × 250), /skyscraper (120 × 600), /hd720 and more. The full table is in the syntax section.

Can I use an aspect ratio instead of a height?

Yes: /600x16:9 calculates the height from the width and the ratio.

Where do the random photos come from, and can I use them?

/random/800x600 returns a real photo cropped to the requested size. All of them are CC0 (public domain) and come from Wikimedia Commons; the author of each one is listed on the credits page. Use ?cat= to filter by category and ?seed= to always get the same photo.

What is the maximum size?

9999 pixels per side and 16 megapixels in area. Text can be up to 200 characters long.

Are the images cached?

Yes. Every URL always produces the same bytes and is served with Cache-Control: immutable and an ETag, so browsers and CDNs keep it for a year.
