The four most used sizes
- 1080 × 1080 (1:1): the square post. Works on almost every network.
- 1080 × 1350 (4:5): the portrait feed post. It takes up more of a phone screen, so it usually performs better than square.
- 1080 × 1920 (9:16): stories, Reels, Shorts and TikTok. Full-screen vertical.
- 1200 × 630 (1.91:1): the image shown when a link is shared. It is the
og:image.
If you design one piece for several networks, start from the largest size and crop. And watch the ratio more than the pixels: uploading twice the resolution at the same ratio usually gives a sharper image.
Safe zones
In full-screen vertical formats, the top is covered by the account name and progress bar, and the bottom by buttons and captions. Keep text and logos away from the edges. The same goes for profile pictures: almost every network crops them to a circle, so the important part has to be in the middle.
Format and file size
JPG for photographs and PNG for images with text, logos or flat colours: text comes out cleaner. Networks recompress everything you upload, so huge files are pointless; the exact size at good quality is better.
Using the placeholders
Each URL in the tables returns a grey image of that size. Use it to build a template, a post preview or a website's Open Graph tags before the final image exists:
<meta property="og:image" content="https://ximg.es/1200x630/2563eb/ffffff.png?text=My%20site">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
You can change the colours, add text and pick the format in the URL itself, as in the generator.
